Rebecca Hughes, an interior designer with a keen eye for detail, has transformed a quiet, characterful Norfolk home into a rustic country retreat. The project was a collaboration with an entrepreneurial couple who wanted a warm and inviting space for their family and visitors, while also preserving the property's rich history and natural surroundings.
One of the key elements of the design is the use of a restrained color palette, featuring serene neutrals, earthy greens, and soft blues. This palette reflects the countryside hues and evokes a sense of calm. Contrast is added through richly layered fabrics, natural wood, and heritage details, such as oak furniture and wool. Textural surfaces, like Tadelakt and Zellige tiles, further enhance the artisanal charm of the space.
The kitchen, a central hub for family life, cooking, and entertaining, was designed to be a conversational space. Natural conversational areas are created by the kitchen island and the floral sofa, while Zellige tiles on the walls bring texture and interest. The owners' desire for a feeling of elevated relaxation without ostentation is evident in the bedrooms, where the comforts of home are combined with luxurious touches, such as dressing gowns, slippers, and notepads.
One of the most memorable spaces in the home is the children's bunk room, which features a whimsical 'magical' den area and bespoke window treatments. Rebecca's attention to detail is evident in the tonal layering of pattern, fabric, and provenance, creating a cohesive and definitive interior style. The project is not yet complete, as Rebecca is currently converting the estate's listed former livestock barn into a 'cool but glorified pub' and refreshing the pool house. The owners have also expressed interest in another property opposite, which Rebecca is poised to help with. Her work has created a sense of excitement and connection for the couple, which is a testament to her skill and creativity as an interior designer.
